The IBJJF Charlotte Open 2023 took place across October 7th and 8th, 2023 and there was plenty of action in every adult black belt division that ran at the event. There were more competitors entered on the first day for the gi divisions than there were in no gi on the Sunday, something that is pretty commonplace in IBJJF events. The featherweight division in particular was full of elite grapplers as Eduardo Granzotto took home the gold medal by beating Emilio Hernandez in the final. Hernandez returned the next day to take a default gold in the no gi featherweight division and a bronze medal in the absolute.
The lightweight division was just as exciting on the first day, and Shane Hill-Taylor was the man who managed to stand on top of that podium. Lucas Brito shone in the middleweight division on both days, leaving the IBJJF Charlotte Open 2023 with a pair of gold medals for his efforts. Jose Inacio dos Santos left the tournament with the biggest haul of medals though, as he won the ultra-heavyweight division on both days along with a gold medal in the no gi absolute and a bronze medal in the gi absolute.
It was Enderson Dias who came away with the biggest prize in the gi though, as he won the absolute division after emerging from the heavyweight division with a gold medal too. Unfortunately there weren’t very many female competitors in the adult black belt divisions at the IBJJF Charlotte Open 2023 and although Suellen Lima walked away with four gold medals across both days, she only had to win a single match in order to do so. There were plenty of masters competitors though, and a lot of attention was on Joao Miyao as he stood on top of the podium in the master 1 light-featherweight division.
