Nicholas Meregali has just announced that he will be competing in the gi more often in 2024, only he’ll be doing it without actually training in the gi. Meregali has already established himself as one of the top gi grapplers in the world and his flawless performances recently have led to him winning Male Gi Grappler of the Year at the Jits Magazine 2023 BJJ Awards. He managed to do this without even stepping on the mats in some of the biggest tournaments of the year, because he beat all of his biggest opposition and didn’t lose a single match in the year.
Things will be a little different for Nicholas Meregali in 2024 though, as he has a huge no gi tournament to prepare for at the same time. He was given a surprise invite to ADCC 2022 and although most people were expecting a good performance from him, he did even better than they had imagined. He reached the podium in the under 99kg division first, going 3-1 and earning a bronze medal in a stacked division. Meregali didn’t stop there though, as he entered the absolute division and went 3-1 there to add a silver medal to his collection.
This guaranteed that Meregali would be invited to return to ADCC 2024 and as a fierce competitor, he will be eager to do even better than last time and leave with at least one world title. While he’s apparently going to be focusing on no gi in training, he’s also going to be getting a lot of competition in the gi over the course of the year. Meregali announced that he’ll be doing IBJJF Open events and taking what he calls ‘fake superfights’, where he intends to increase the number of wins he has by submission.
