Nicholas Meregali opened up about the idea of competing against Mica Galvao, and he revealed that he has no desire to take the fight in a recent appearance on the MMA Hoje podcast, translated by Tatame. That might be a disappointment to a lot of fans, seeing as both Meregali and Galvao are among the most successful competitors of their generation. Despite competing in drastically different weight classes, a match between these two would undoubtedly be incredibly popular. Still, Meregali explained why he had no interest in the matchup:
“I said I would never do that fight, because there are two very different brands and we are very different. I am very real and he is very fake. His brand is very much based on humility and overcoming obstacles and coming from the bottom. I lived in a gym for five years and a lot of people don’t even know it.”
So it seems as though Nicholas Meregali isn’t a particularly big fan of Mica Galvao. Normally this kind of bad blood actually makes for more interesting matchups, and many feuds between grapplers have led to some epic matches. Meregali reiterated that this won’t be the case for him and Galvao though:
“I was very clear with Viktor Doria (Meregali’s manager), that I won’t fight Mica because of this falsehood. There’s no money in the world to pay me to fight him. One because I know I spank him, and second, there’s no one to do it. It’s going to keep getting bombed and I’m not going to do this fight.”
Of course, the two men could have met in competition by pure chance in the past. Now that Meregali has decided to stop competing in IBJJF tournaments, the chances of that happening have been drastically reduced. If Meregali won’t take a superfight against Galvao then the only other way they might meet on the mats would be in an absolute tournament that both men have been invited to. Given that the last absolute tournament Galvao did resulted in a devastating injury, that might not be so likely in the future either.
