A former Olympic Wrestler turned MMA fighter, Khetag Pliev suffers one of the most gruesome injuries ever seen in combat sports in the below video, when he loses a finger in the middle of a grappling exchange at CFFC 94. Pliev is an extremely decorated wrestler, being a four-time national champion who represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympics and he came into this 180lbs catchweight fight with a professional MMA record of 4-2.
There was a tough grappling exchange towards the end of the first round where both competitors were against the cage, and everything seemed normal as the bell sounded for the end of the round. Then, between rounds it was discovered that Pliev had lost a finger and the fight was immediately called off as medical staff entered the cage in order to try and find the digit. This sort of freak injury seems almost impossible and it’s certainly not something that anybody can ever prepare for, or even possibly fight through.
“They just made a PA announcement at #CFFC94 that they are trying to locate a fighter’s missing finger. It evidently fell off into his glove during the bout and is missing somewhere in the venue.” TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter tweeted.
Former WWE wrestler and UFC competitor CM Punk was on the announcer’s desk for the event and even he seemed confused as to exactly how an MMA fighter loses a finger during a match:
“I don’t understand exactly what happened. We’re not going to replay it for you, ladies and gentlemen, but it wasn’t a compound fracture. It wasn’t a dislocation, a break, a laceration. His finger was just gone. It’s gone. It fell off, ripped off.”
