Mikey Musumeci recently dropped in to the infamous Superbon Training Camp to start training Muay Thai alongside several elite fighters. It’s not clear exactly why Musumeci has decided to spend some time working on his striking, but he has been open about his desire to try out the sport and see if he’d like to make the transition to MMA. Even if he doesn’t ever end up testing out his striking skills in a competitive setting, training in the sport is still a great way to get additional cardio in. There are quite a lot of benefits to cross-training in other sports and it seemed as though Musumeci was having a great time learning something new anyway.
It makes sense too, as Musumeci has dedicated years of his life to becoming one of the best BJJ competitors in the world and he’s reached a point where months of work is needed just to make the smallest improvement. Going from that environment to one where everything is pretty new can often feel like a refreshing change of pace. Being newer to a sport means that it’s far easier and quicker to make measurable improvements, which helps make the process feel more fun than it might do later on in the journey.
Mikey Musumeci is far from the first top BJJ competitor to sharpen his Muay Thai skills at Superbon Training Camp too, as both of the Ruotolo brothers have stopped by in the past. In fact, although the two combat sports don’t have much at all in common there are quite a lot of fighters who have dabbled in both over the years. Muay Thai legend Rodtang Jitmuangnon has even put on a gi for a BJJ training session with DJ Jackson in the past.
Both Mikey Musumeci and the Superbon Training Camp themselves uploaded plenty of footage of him dropping in to train Muay Thai with them in recent posts to their official Instagram account:
