Mica Galvao has just revealed that he will be competing in all four major IBJJF events in 2024, meaning that he will be in contention for an IBJJF Grand Slam. It’s a coveted achievement that very few BJJ competitors have ever secured, as it requires winning putting on perfect performances in four tournaments that are stacked with elite grapplers. This is actually the second challenge of the year for Galvao, as he announced at the beginning of the year that he was going to be moving up to the middleweight division from that point onwards.
Galvao is already prepared to make his first appearance at an IBJJF major at that weight, as he has entered the IBJJF European Championship 2024 and is actually one of the favorites to win the division. He won’t have much time to rest if he’s aiming for an IBJJF Grand Slam though, as competing in all four majors is a brutal schedule. There’s a little break before the IBJJF Pan Championship in March but the IBJJF Brazilian National Championship is just a few weeks later and although there’s no date confirmed yet, the biggest IBJJF major isn’t usually long after that. The IBJJF World Championship is the final event of the gi calendar and it is generally held in June, meaning that Galvao will have an incredibly busy start to the year.
This is coupled with the fact that Galvao has also arranged to make the last defense of Who’s Number One title before he moves up in weight permanently, and he will naturally be booked in more superfights as the year progresses. There won’t be time to rest even after this busy start to the year either, as he is a guaranteed invite to ADCC 2024 as a silver medalist in the 77kg division at ADCC 2022. If Galvao is able to perform at his best throughout the grueling year ahead of him, he might just be able to secure his name in the history books as the second person after Rubens ‘Cobrinha’ Charles to complete a ‘Super Grand Slam’ of winning all IBJJF Majors and an ADCC title in a single year.
Mica Galvao announced the news that he was planning on competing in all four IBJJF Grand Slam events in 2024 in a recent interview with the IBJJF that was uploaded to his official Instagram account:
