Mica Galvao has already had an incredible run throughout 2024 but he’s not content to rest on his success as he has his sights set on one more match before the end of the year. Galvao made history this year by becoming the second person to ever win a super grand slam, and the youngest to do it. It’s a remarkable achievement that requires a competitor to be the best in their weight class in both gi and no gi grappling for an entire year. Galvao had to win all four major IBJJF events before switching things up and winning ADCC 2024 immediately afterward, marking the end of a gruelling competition schedule for the year.
Galvao has been one of the top competitors in the world for several years now and he was right on the verge of winning the biggest titles in the sport even before 2024. He would have already been an IBJJF World Champion if not for a failed PEDs test that led to him being stripped of the title and he almost won ADCC on his last attempt before this year. That was all the way back in 2022 when he made his debut in the under 77kg division, and he left with a silver medal after losing in the final to Kade Ruotolo.
Nothing could stand in his way in 2024, as Galvao was able to pass both of the IBJJF’s mandatory PEDs tests he underwent this year. That meant that he kept the major titles he had won there, and when ADCC came around it became clear that his rival and reigning champion Ruotolo would be competing at CJI instead. That left Galvao as the favorite to win the under 77kg division and he made good on that promise, beating four opponents to take home the title. Mica Galvao now has a 24-1 record for the 2024 and he’s looking to hit a nice round number by taking on one final match before the year is over.
Mica Galvao announced that he was preparing for another match to finish off 2024 in a recent post to his official Instagram account. The original statement is in Portuguese but he left an English translation in the comments:
“The holidays are coming to an end, it’s almost time to go back to Brazil and start preparing for the next challenges. Today I have the 83kg gi belt at BJJ Stars and I also have the 77kg no gi belt at Who’s Number One. I would like to have a fight this year and I would like to know if you would like to see me defend my belts, if you would like to see me again at Polaris, or if you would like to see me debut for example at Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship, (Pit Submission Series), or ONE Championship and against whom. Or if you think an OPEN in northeast would be a good idea, or maybe go to Australia to see this beautiful place that I’ve never been to before and fight at the (IBJJF Pan Pacific Championship). Tell me, you are my managers now. Where would you send me?”
