Luke Griffith just put on an absolutely flawless performance at brown belt at the IBJJF No Gi Pan Championship 2023, as he won a pair of gold medals from the event. Not only did Griffith manage to win both the ultra-heavyweight division and the absolute division, but he also submitted every single one of his opponents in both brackets as well. He finished the day out with 5 submissions in 5 matches and solidified the fact that he belongs among the top no gi competitors around.
His success at the IBJJF No Gi Pan Championship 2023 should come as no surprise really, seeing as Griffith is already an ADCC veteran despite being pretty early on in his professional grappling career. Griffith didn’t receive an invite to the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament out of nowhere either, he actually won the European, Middle-Eastern, and African Trials in 2022. That booked his place at ADCC 2022 and although he wasn’t able to get past the opening round, he gave a great account of himself in a very difficult opening round match against Yuri Simoes.
Simoes went on to win the absolute division at ADCC 2022 so it was impressive that Griffith went the entire match without getting any points scored against him. Griffith has also helped Team Modolfo to victory at the AIGA Champions League and is the reigning Grapplefest under 100kgs champion, so he has a ton of experience under different rulesets. With several fantastic performances all across the world, Griffith has been one of the top prospects around for quite some time now. With plenty of time ahead of him, it’ll be interesting to see how far he’s able to go over the next few years.
