Kayla Harrison is no longer the undefeated queen of women’s Lightweight MMA as she has just been handed her first professional loss at the hands of Larissa Pacheco at PFL 10. The pair have fought on two occasions in the past, both in 2019, and Harrison won both of those fights by unanimous decision. They first met at one of the regular matches of the PFL 2019 Women’s Lightweight season and although Pacheco was unable to beat Harrison then, she did become the first woman to go the distance with her. Pacheco won both of her other PFL fights that year to book her place across from Harrison in a rematch for the title, although she suffered the same fate again.
Pacheco had won five straight fights since then, and Harrison had continued her dominance of the division by adding another eight wins to her record. With Harrison’s most recent submission win over Martina Jindrova, she earned a place in her third PFL tournament final and improved her incredible record to a perfect 15-0. All signs were pointing toward Kayla Harrison winning the third match, but Larissa Pacheco was determined to hand her the first loss of her MMA career now that she had another chance.
In the end Pacheco got exactly what she wanted when her fight with Harrison went to the judge’s scorecards for the third time, as she got the nod this time around. Harrison started out strong in the first round and things seemed to be going her way as she used her grappling advantage well, but Pacheco came out strong in the second and clearly hurt the undefeated champion. The third round saw Pacheco catch Harrison in a tight triangle choke after being taken down and she almost managed to finish it before Harrison escaped, but with too little left on the clock to win the round. The fourth round was where Pacheco really started to come into her own as she started to win grappling exchanges and stuff takedowns with more regularity, before a competitive fifth round to close the show.
It was a close fight overall and either woman could have been declared the winner had a handful of exchanges gone the other way, but Pacheco did enough to get the win without much debate in the end. The women’s lightweight title wasn’t the only belt on the line either, as PFL 10 featured a total of five fights to finish off the 2022 season and declare the champions for this year. When all was said and done, six MMA fighters walked out of the cage as millionaires at PFL 10.
