Kairos Pro Jiu-Jitsu 1 took place on May 7th, 2023 and all of the women competing at the promotion’s first event delivered tons of action and some great results. The lineup for their under 66kg tournament was stacked with top female grapplers from all around Europe and with a grand prize of £2,000 available, everyone was putting it all on the line to emerge victorious. The unique attraction for the event was a ruleset that allowed for an element of random chance, as a coin-toss decided whether each match would be contested in gi or no gi.
The 10 women involved were split into 2 groups of 5 and competed in a round-robin format to determine who reached the final, meaning that everyone got a great chance to display their skills. Each match was contested over 10 minutes and they used a simplified point-scoring system where all of the traditional scoring positions/transitions were awarded with 1 point. This definitely helped increase the tension in a lot of these matches too, as it was very difficult for anyone to really run up the scoreboard at any point.
Group A was fairly evenly-matched in general but Vanessa English stood out from the other four women competing and managed to book her place in the final. Astrid Scholin deserves recognition for not only coming from 2-0 down in her first match against Sula-Mae Loewenthal to win 3-2 but also for levelling the score with English in the dying seconds to become the only woman in the group to hold her to a draw. Group B on the other hand was much closer, with Selma Vik and Gabi Schuck both putting on dominant displays and having ‘Match of the Night’ in a draw against one another. In the end it was Schuck who progressed from the second group and got herself a gi match with English in the final, having another incredibly close match that she lost by referee decision.
