JitsCast #17 features one of the most exciting competitors in the world, Renato Canuto. Not only is Canuto known for his fast-paced and entertaining style, but he’s also won major events at the highest level of the sport. He has won the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF No Gi World Championship over the course of his career, and has become one of the biggest names in the sport in the process. Canuto has competed on all the biggest stages in the sport like at ADCC and ONE Championship, and he was part of the Craig Jones Invitational lineup at under 80kg.
We wanted to speak to Canuto about his rise to the top of the sport, including his journey as a child and coloured belt competitor as well. He spoke about some of the biggest names he’s faced and the most important lessons he learned along the way. Canuto also explained why he eventually drifted away from gi competition and why he had extended periods without matches just a few years ago. That naturally led Canuto to talk about his desire to pursue MMA; and he explained how his striking training has been going and when he intends to make his debut.
Canuto also reflected on the rivalry between CJI and ADCC, explaining why he chose to compete at CJI in the end. Although Canuto has competed everywhere, lately he’s been focused on developing his career at UFC Fight Pass Invitational. He took the time to look back at the matches that he’s had with the promotion so far, including an in-depth breakdown of his match against elite wrestler Jason Nolf at UFC FPI 9. After looking back at his career so far, Canuto also talked about the future he has ahead of him as well. He talked about his upcoming match with Oliver Taza at UFC FPI 10, and even revealed his long-term plans after his competitive career is over.
