The IBJJF World Championship 2025 took place from May 29th to June 1st, 2025 and the results saw several competitors making history. One of the most notable moments came when Adam Wardzinski became the first European IBJJF grand slam champion by winning the heavyweight division, only to immediately announce his retirement. He wasn’t the only one to secure a place in the history books either, as 18 year-old prodigy Mia Funegra became the youngest world champion ever after taking gold at light-featherweight. Beyond that, there was a great mix of predictable winners and surprising upsets across both the men’s and women’s weight classes.
Gabrieli Pessanha won both the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions for the fifth consecutive year, completing an incredibly fast run to becoming a 10-time world champion. Erich Munis won the men’s equivalent of both of those divisions, marking his first time as a double champion. Roosevelt Sousa won the only heavier weight class at ultra-heavyweight and the other end of the scale featured another first-time champion, as Jalen Fonacier took gold at roosterweight. Although there were plenty of other new champions in the women’s divisions, Joao Mendes was the only other man to win his first world title this year when he won the featherweight division.
Larissa Campos won her first title at featherweight, while Janaina Lebre and Thalyta Silva achieved the same feat at lightweight and middleweight respectively. There were a few returns to glory too, with Larissa Dias winning her second title after a three-year break. Tainan Dalpra had a similar story at middleweight; where he won his third title, while the medium-heavyweight division saw Jansen Gomes return with another gold medal since he won back in 2023. One man has had an even longer wait to get back here than all of them though. Matheus Gabriel won the lightweight division and added a second title to his collection after winning his first all the way back in 2019.
The final few champions all managed to retain their titles, with some of them extending already-impressive streaks. Thamara Ferreira won the medium-heavyweight division for the second year in a row, but the roosterweight division saw Mayssa Bastos become the champion for the 6th year in a row. Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira had a fantastic week as well, winning his third title in a row at light-featherweight and his fourth overall. He also took the lead in the biggest rivalry of his career in the final match, beating Diogo Reis and moving to 4-3 against him in what has been an epic series.
