The IBJJF San Diego Summer Open 2024 took place on August 3rd and 4th, 2024 and there were several high-level black belt competitors entering the event. Marcus Ribeiro walked away with the biggest prize in the men’s gi brackets, as he won gold medals in both the ultra-heavyweight and absolute divisions. He wasn’t the only big name on the podium in the absolute though, as featherweight default winner Eduardo Granzotto ended up with a bronze medal despite the size difference between him and the other men in the division. The super-heavyweight division also featured a top contender standing at the top of the podium, as Paulo Merlin emerged as the champion there.
The lightweight division also stood out at the IBJJF San Diego Summer Open 2024, as the Joao Mendes beat Guilherme Fernandes in the final. The women’s brackets were equally entertaining and packed with just as much top talent as well. The double champion there was Melissa Stricker, who was given a default gold medal at super-heavyweight and won the women’s absolute shortly afterward. Janaina Lebre won gold in the middleweight division too, but most of the action actually took place at featherweight. That’s where Karen Terra emerged victorious; while Yasmyn Castro settled for a pair of silver medals there and in the absolute, and the bronze medal went to Larissa Campos.
The no gi divisions took place on the second day and a few competitors did return, most notably Joao Mendes who won the lightweight division once again. Karen Terra also returned for a default gold at featherweight, while Nadia Frankland made an appearance to collect two default golds at medium-heavyweight and in the absolute. The men’s double champion was a fresh face as well, with ATOS black belt Calon Sabino arriving to win the absolute after collecting a default gold medal at super-heavyweight. All in all the IBJJF San Diego Summer Open 2024 was a great weekend of grappling with several entertaining matches.
