The IBJJF No Gi World Championship 2025 took place on December 11th to 13th, 2025 and the results saw quite a few new champions emerge. There were a few returning champions adding another title to their collection too; including Roosevelt Sousa, who won both the ultra-heavyweight and absolute divisions to become a three-time gold medalist. Elisabeth Clay did the same in the women’s divisions, winning both the middleweight and absolute divisions. She also delivered the biggest upset of the day in the absolute final, as she became the first woman to submit Gabrieli Pessanha and shortly after she became the super-heavyweight champion herself.
The only other male competitor to win a second title was Cole Abate, who won the lightweight division after winning featherweight gold last year. Then in the women’s heavyweight division, Cassia Moura won her second title after moving all the way up from her usual home of featherweight. Everybody else was a new champion, but it’s not as if they were all coming out of nowhere. Adele Fornarino came in as the double champion from ADCC 2024 so she was always a favorite, and she delivered on that promise by winning gold at featherweight. Meanwhile, fellow ADCC medalist Helena Crevar won her first no gi world title at medium-heavyweight.
Veteran competitors Thais Loureiro and Javier Barter won their respective weight classes at women’s roosterweight and men’s heavyweight, but the story in the remaining female divisions was all about the young prospects. Teenage contenders Ashlee Funegra and Lillian Marchand both completed their journey to the top, winning the light-featherweight and lightweight divisions despite facing some of the best in the world. The men’s divisions on the other hand featured a huge moment for European Jiu-Jitsu, as they featured multiple champions from that continent for the first time ever. Historically there’s only ever been one male European champion at a time at most, but this year there were three.
Shay Montague kicked things off by winning the roosterweight division and becoming the first Scottish champion, while Pawel Jaworski became the first Polish champion at medium-heavyweight. The final European man to win gold this year was Tarik Hopstock, who became the second Norwegian champion when he stood on top of the middleweight podium. Australia had an amazing year too though, as Fornarino wasn’t their only champion. Nicholas Maglicic also won his division at heavyweight, becoming the first man to take a world title back to Australia. The final men’s champions were Marco Mendes and Marcos Gomes, both of whom delivered minor upsets by winning gold at featherweight and light-featherweight respectively.
