The IBJJF Grand Prix 2022 took place on 28th October and saw two tournaments in different divisions both delivering exciting results. This was actually the very first time that the grand prix was staged in a women’s division, with one of the tournaments taking place at Lightweight for female competitors. In the end it was the newcomer who caused all the upsets in the bracket as Janaina Lebre announced her arrival at the biggest levels of the sport. Lebre was called up at the last minute to replace Nathalie Ribeiro and she really hit the ground running when she outpointed Luiza Monteiro in the opening round. She faced off with Anna Rodrigues in the final and put in some fantastic work to end up defeating her on points as well in order to walk away with the grand prize.
The men’s grand prix tournament took place in the Medium-Heavyweight division and Isaque Bahiense was coming in hot off his ADCC debut earlier this year. Bahiense submitted Andre Porfirio in his opening round match and booked his place in the final opposite the legendary Manuel Ribamar. The final was an incredibly tough match and neither man was able to put any points on the board but in the end, it was Bahiense who managed to secure two advantages for near scores in order to emerge victorious. The superfights also delivered plenty of action, with Fellipe Andrew and Tainan Dalpra securing slick submission victories over Roosevelt Sousa and Rodrigo Lopes respectively.
