The IBJJF Grand Prix 2022 is set to take place on October 28th with the event being set to feature a four-man tournament in the men’s Medium-Heavyweight division and the very first women’s grand prix as well, with both set of competitors now announced. The men’s Medium-Heavyweight grand prix will see an ADCC veteran make his return to IBJJF competition as Isaque Bahiense attempts to win both his matches and claim the grand prize. He will have some incredibly tough opposition though as Manuel Ribamar, Ronaldo Junior, and Andre Porfirio will all be standing in his way.
The women’s grand prix meanwhile will be breaking new ground, as there has never been a female version of this event until now. The event has gone through a number of changes, as it was first delayed by several months and it has also experienced a change of lineup in the competitors present. Originally the women’s grand prix was set to feature Ffion Davies, Anna Rodrigues, Nathalie Ribeiro, and Beatriz Mesquita but the delay necessitated some alterations.
While Rodrigues and Ribeiro were still able to compete on the new date, both Mesquita and Davies had to be replaced. As a result, the IBJJF brought in a pair of huge names in the form of three-time IBJJF gi world champion Mayssa Bastos and two-time IBJJF gi world champion Luiza Monteiro. Ribeiro was also forced to withdraw from the IBJJF Grand Prix 2022 on relatively short notice but Janaina Lebre, one of the most exciting young prospects in the sport right now, has been tapped to replace her and she will no doubt be a tough challenge for any of her more experienced opponents.
