The IBJJF European Championship 2026 took place from January 15th to 24th, 2026 and the results saw a handful of upsets among this year’s champions. The most predictable outcome was in the heaviest women’s weight classes, as Gabrieli Pessanha won both the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions for the 5th year in a row. It was far from easy though, especially in the absolute final where she met lightweight champion Sarah Galvao for an incredibly tough match. There was no double champion in the men’s weight classes, as Gabriel Ribeiro won the absolute division after going out in the second round at super-heavyweight.
Vinicius Liberati was the super-heavyweight champion, and Seif Eddine-Houmine won the only heavier weight class available; ultra-heavyweight. Although both of those divisions were won by the underdogs rather than the favorites, they weren’t the biggest upsets at all. That honour goes to either 20 year-old Will Wilson; who won his first black belt major in a stacked lightweight division, or the German black belt and medium-heavyweight champion Denise Krahn. The women’s roosterweight division also saw Thais Loureiro beating one of the best to ever do it in the final, and Cassia Moura continued her amazing run by adding another title to her collection at featherweight.
In a similar vein, Eduardo Alves delivered a minor upset by winning the men’s medium-heavyweight division and the roosterweight champion there was rising star Jalen Fonacier. The rest of the divisions were much easier to predict, particularly with elite competitors like Tainan Dalpra and Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira winning gold at middleweight and light-featherweight respectively. Then there was a few other favorites making good on their promise in the women’s divisions, like Yara Soares winning heavyweight gold and Larissa Martins taking home the middleweight title. The final female champion this year was Ashlee Funegra at light-featherweight, while Kennedy Maciel and Leonardo Ferreira finished off the men’s roster at featherweight and heavyweight respectively.
