The IBJJF Brazilian National Championship (Brasileiro) 2025 took place from April 26th to May 4th, 2025 and another year of champions were crowned in the results. The Brazilians won the majority of the titles as always, but this year featured a surprising number of foreign gold medallists. Adam Wardzinski became just the fourth European to win this event when he stood on top of the podium at heavyweight, while Cole Abate became the fourth American male champion by winning the featherweight division. One woman came from further abroad as well, as Elisabeth Clay won the middleweight division to became the third American female champion.
There were plenty of surprises elsewhere too, with Rodrigo Otavio winning gold in the men’s roosterweight division and exciting young contender Cassia Moura becoming the women’s featherweight champion. The biggest shock of the week came in the women’s super-heavyweight division though, where Tayane Porfirio got revenge and dethroned Gabrieli Pessanha by beating her in the final. Pessanha did rally to win the absolute division, but her hopes of a fourth consecutive double grand slam were shattered regardless. There was a make double champion though, as Erich Munis predictably ran through both the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions to win two gold medals.
There were other favorites in the men’s divisions who made good on their early promise too, like Tainan Dalpra winning at middleweight and Jansen Gomes winning at medium-heavyweight. Fans were treated to a great performance in the light-featherweight division by Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira, while Marcus Ribeiro won at super-heavyweight and Lucas Maquine was the final men’s champion at lightweight. Mayssa Bastos was the other big favorite in the women’s divisions and she won gold at roosterweight once again. Just above her in the light-featherweight division, Brenda Larissa won her third Brasileiro title with a series of great wins over tough opponents.
One of the other big storylines in the women’s divisions was at heavyweight, where top contender Yara Soares was dropping down from super-heavyweight in an attempt to find more success. It proved to be the right choice too, as she won her first Brasileiro title since 2021. The medium-heavyweight division was won by Maria Vicentini and the final women’s champion was Janaina Lebre, who stood on top of the podium in the lightweight division by getting revenge against one if her biggest rivals in the final. Brasileiro was full of twists and turns at every stage and the champions only tell half the story, as there was plenty of thrilling matches and slick finishes throughout.
