Rodolfo Vieira came into UFC 258 as the clear favorite to win his fight against Anthony Hernandez and considering he’d finished all seven of his opponents with six submissions, it seemed incredibly likely that he’d get the win by submission too. He was coming off a minor rib injury that kept him out of his last fight against Markus Perez, but seemed fully recovered coming into the fight. Unfortunately for the ADCC and five-time IBJJF World Champion, Hernandez managed to completely turn the tables on him and earn one of the biggest upsets in recent memory in the second round. It wasn’t a good night for Jiu-Jitsu in MMA as Gilbert Burns also lost in his long-awaited title-shot against Kamaru Usman.

Vieira started off pretty well early in the fight but his cardio waned considerably as it progressed and shot for a takedown late in the second round that left his neck completely exposed. Hernandez took full advantage of the momentary lapse in judgement and locked up an incredibly tight Guillotine to secure the tap only a matter of seconds later. In hindsight, knowing that Vieira is an elite grappler who isn’t particularly known for his wrestling and that Hernandez has finished half of his professional victories by Guillotine leading up to this fight, this was an outcome that while unlikely, was certainly a possibility.

Hernandez has put himself back in the win-column after losing his last fight and will likely have earned a bigger opponent after stealing some of the shine that Rodolfo Vieira had developed so far in his UFC career. Vieira on the other hand, will likely spend some time going back to the drawing board and he’ll certainly need to work hard on his cardio if he ever wants to start competing in five-round fights as his career progresses.
