The IBJJF American National Championship 2023 took place across July 6th and 7th, 2023 and several of the country’s top competitors delivered great results. It attracted even more talent than usual, owing to the fact that the tournament served as part of UFC International Fight Week this year. The medium-heavyweight division in particular was stacked with top talent, with Horlando Monteiro emerging victorious in a really tough bracket. The bronze position on the podium was occupied by both Gabriel Costa and Ronaldo Junior, with both men returning in the absolute division and sharing the final. In the end it was Junior who won gold there, and he had some really difficult matches along the way, including a semi-final against the middleweight gold medalist Jackson Nagai.
Other notable results from the men’s divisions of the IBJJF American National Championship 2023 include Italo Lima Costa winning gold at heavyweight, Danilo Moreira winning the lightweight division, and Felipe Costa standing on top of the super-heavyweight podium. There was plenty of top female grapplers competing at the event too, and Melissa Stricker was the one who managed to walk away with the win in the absolute division after taking a default gold at heavyweight. She beat the middleweight gold medalist Thamara Ferreira in the final, while Elisabeth Clay had to settle for a silver in that division and a bronze in the absolute. The final spot on the podium of the absolute division was occupied by Thaynara Dias, who won gold at super-heavyweight.
