The full rules in use for the team tournament at CJI 2 have now been announced and although it generally follows the Quintet format, there are some slight changes. The most notable is the weight classes, as traditional Quintet teams all have a collective weight-limit but teams at CJI will have representatives in each of the 5 ADCC weight classes instead. That was actually the first difference that was confirmed, along with the most obvious one out of them all. Craig Jones is going to continue using the unique ‘alley’ structure that he used last year for the very first time in the inaugural CJI, keeping the action contained.
In the recent release of the official rules for CJI 2 they also revealed a number of other minor differences that, when combined together, should make for a dramatically different product. In terms of what’s actually allowed on the mats, not only will competitors be able to slam their way out of a submission but they’ll also be able to use heel hooks too; two things that aren’t allowed at Quintet. This brings the format much more in line with the modern era of professional grappling, so the competitors can use the full range of techniques that they train with.
CJI will also be removing the different time-limits that are in place for Quintet matches when the weight difference is significant and instead, all matches will be 8 minutes long. This means that lighter competitors will no longer have the option to survive a short match and take out a much larger opponent. They’ll also be using the original CJI judging criteria from their first event if every match ends in a draw and double elimination, as a winner will still need to be determined. This, combined with stalling penalties and the angled walls, should hopefully force the action from start to finish in every match.
