Ffion Davies will now be defending her 125lbs Who’s Number One title against Jasmine Rocha, in the co-main event of their August 10th, 2023 card. It’s an excellent match up between one of the best female grapplers on the planet right now and a rising star who is looking to make her name in the sport. Davies won the promotion’s 125lbs title all the way back in 2021 when she defeated Nathalie Ribeiro by unanimous decision and she hasn’t been able to defend it since then because she’s been busy climbing to the top of the BJJ world everywhere else.
She took a little time away from no gi competition shortly after that title-winning performance and went on to win her first IBJJF world championship gold medal in 2022. Her return to no gi competition was even more impressive as she registered one of the biggest achievements of her career to date, winning the under 60kg division at ADCC 2022. That was probably the best year of Davies’ competitive career so far, although she’s already started out this year strongly by retaining her IBJJF world championship title in a flawless performance.
While Jasmine Rocha doesn’t have the same accolades that Ffion Davies has earned in recent years, she’s also much earlier on in her professional grappling career. Rocha has only recently turned 21 and has already been hard at work against some of the best competitors on the planet since she was a teenager. She’s reached the podium of ADCC trials and earned a silver medal from the IBJJF no gi world championship last year, proving that she belongs at the highest level. Rocha has been in great form recently too, winning double gold in the ADCC Dallas Open.
It’ll be interesting to see if Rocha is able to take the title from Davies, or if the experience of success at the highest level of the sport will prove to be too much for her to overcome. This match will serve as the co-main event too, as an exciting battle between Nicholas Meregali and Kaynan Duarte has already been confirmed as the main event of the August 10th, 2023 Who’s Number One card. The event is already looking fantastic, and there will almost certainly be a few more elite matches added to the lineup before long.
