Fellipe Andrew managed to secure the highest honor of the weekend at the IBJJF Pan-ams 2021 as he took home gold medals in both his weightclass and the absolute division. This marked a slight improvement for the Alliance representative as last year he only managed to walk away with a bronze medal in his weightclass despite winning the absolute division. He was unfortunate to be disqualified in the semi-finals against Arnaldo Maidana, before he also lost to the eventual winner, Guilherme Augusto.
This year, Andrew defeated all of his opponents to book his place in the Heavyweight final against Augusto and put on a phenomenal display to win gold in his weightclass. Curiously, his opponent in the final of the absolute division this year was exactly the same as in 2020, Gustavo Batista. Their match this year played out a pretty similar story to their first one, with Batista pulling guard early on but not being able to mount enough of an offensive to counteract Andrew’s crushing guard-passing and top-game. In fact, Andrew won the second match by an even wider margin than the first as he racked up an impressive 18 points to Batista’s 8 in order to earn the victory in the end.
