Evolve Ur Game and Jiujitsu Battle joined forces to produce a fantastic grand prix event on September 9th, 2023 and the results were brilliant. It’s rare to see two professional grappling promotions working together to stage an event, but EUG and JJB attracted an excellent lineup of elite middleweights to compete for a grand prize of $10,000. They did a great job of setting up the bracket for the tournament as well, as the two favorites to take home the title were on opposite sides. ADCC veterans Oliver Taza and Andy Varela looked as though they would run through to the final at first but most of their matches were hard-fought victories.
It was a real testament to the high level of skill that Victor Silveiro and Sebastian Rodriguez possess, as both men had tough matches with Taza where nobody was able to score any points. Taza got the nod thanks to the judges to book his way into the final, whereas Varela was able to make his journey to the top more convincingly. He beat Eduardo Avelar 2-0 on points in the opening round before putting on an incredibly dominant display against Andres Granados where he racked up 19 points to 0. The final was another close match, but Varela did enough to earn the judge’s decision this time around, and he was crowned the champion.
