UFC 273 featured a number of elite grapplers competing on the card and most of them managed to get wins against tough opposition, although not all. The night started out with one of the best submission artists in UFC Heavyweight history, Aleksei Oleinik, showing that he still has what it take to keep racking up submission finishes. The MMA veteran managed to secure the 47th submission of his professional MMA career when he forced Jared Vanderaa to tap to a neck crank from Scarfhold.

Shortly after that, Anthony Hernandez managed to bounce back from a year away from the sport to win a comfortable decision over Josh Fremd, his last fight being when he became the first man to submit IBJJF and ADCC world champion Rodolfo Vieira in MMA. Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic silver medalist Mark Madsen also managed to register a convincing victory as he outworked Vinc Pinchel from start to finish shortly before BJJ legend Mackenzie Dern took to the cage. She had a close fight with Tecia Torres and showed remarkable improvements in her striking, but in the end it was the significant grappling advantage she enjoyed that allowed her to win the decision.

In the final fight of UFC 273 involving an accomplished grappler, IBJJF world champion Gilbert Burns entered the cage intent on derailing Khamzat Chimaev’s hype train. Chimaev had been promised a purple belt by his BJJ coach if he managed to submit Burns and he left his corner intent on putting Burns away early in the fight. Burns refused to be taken down and almost finished Chimaev in the second round but was unable to control the fight for any extended periods and in the end, it was Chimaev who did enough to secure victory in all three of the judge’s eyes.
