Elijah Dorsey has just become the fifth and final member of Team Misfits Americas and he will be representing them at under 88kg in the CJI 2 lineup. The addition of Dorsey has caused a bit of a reshuffle in the team, as two other competitors have had to move up in weight to accommodate him. Dorsey himself is also moving up in weight in order to fit into the team, as he generally competes at lightweight (76kg) for IBJJF events and his sole ADCC appearance was at under 77kg. That appearance is probably a big part of why he received the invite to join the team, as he finished fourth at ADCC 2024 by beating two of the best grapplers in the world.
That actually means that he has gone much further in the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament than any of his teammates at CJI 2. In fact, only two of them have made it there in the first place. The team’s wildcard, Taylor Pearman, went out in the opening round last year and he’s one of the men moving up for Dorsey as he goes from under 88kg to under 99kg. That meant that the original under 99kg representative Pat Downey also had to move up, and the elite wrestler will now occupy the heaviest weight class at over 99kg instead.
The only other ADCC veteran on the team is Deandre Corbe and he wasn’t just the first one announced for the team, but one of the first competitors announced for the whole event. He also had to move up from his ADCC weight class and into under 77kg, but he did that in order to make space for his younger brother Gavin Corbe at under 66kg. Now that the team is complete, they can begin putting their final preparations in place ready for the tournament. They’ll be doing so under the guidance of their head coach, Standard Jiu-Jitsu founder Greg Souders.
Pat Downey shared the full roster for Team Misfits Americas at CJI 2, including Elijah Dorsey, in a recent post to his official Instagram account:
