One of the preliminary card fights at UFC Vegas 82 on November 18th, 2023 ended in controversy when the referee made a huge error and registered an early stoppage. Trey Ogden and Nikolas Motta met in one of the first few fights of the night, and Mike Beltran was working as the referee for it. The first round featured some good moments from both men and things seemed to be progressing normally, before Ogden started to put his grappling skills to good use. He was winning the fight and it looked as though he might finish it in the third round when he locked up a tight arm-triangle choke.
That’s when disaster struck, as Beltran asked Motta to demonstrate that he was still conscious while caught in the choke. Motta was stuck between a rock and a hard place though, as he couldn’t really do that without potentially allowing the choke to sink in deeper. That’s when Beltran checked Motta’s arm and despite the fact that it was still active, he waved the fight off as he thought he had been rendered unconscious. If that wasn’t enough controversy at UFC Vegas 82, the fight was then declared a no contest due to the early stoppage and neither man got the win. It was a sad end to an entertaining fight and the hope is that Ogden still gets paid his win-bonus despite the official decision.
