Both Deandre Corbe and Gavin Corbe have decided to quit their regular jobs in order to pursue careers as professional Jiu-Jitsu competitors. The two brothers are both elite grapplers already but they’ve been balancing that athletic pursuit alongside more traditional careers at the same time. Obviously that’s an incredibly tough balancing act and very few people ever manage to excel in both areas, because each one requires a lot of sacrifice. Regardless, the Corbe brothers are two of the few who have managed to do just that and they are both tough opponents for anyone in the lighter weight classes.
Deandre has been particularly successful in fact, winning a stacked under 66kg division at ADCC West Coast Trials last year. Gavin actually won a bronze medal in the same weight class after the brothers met in the semi-final and Deandre won by submission. Deandre’s biggest achievement so far was winning the first ever Sapateiro World Championship, where he bear two ADCC medalists on the same day. Gavin also competed in the same bracket then too, but he went out in the quarter-final just before he would have met Deandre again. That event was also their first taste of major prize money, as Deandre won $100,000 for taking home that title.
Now that both Corbe brothers have been invited to CJI 2, they’ll be receiving $10,002 just to show up to the event and there’s $200,000 on the line for each of them. Because it’s going to be a team tournament, they’ll be working together in different weight classes for Team Misfits Americas and would both win the same prize money if their team wins. This is going to be far from easy though, as the CJI 2 lineup includes some of the best grapplers in the world on different teams and the Corbe brothers will occupy the lightest weight classes at 66kg and 77kg.
Deandre Corbe announced the news that both he and Gavin had quit their jobs in a recent post to his official Instagram account:
