There were a number of last-minute changes to the lineup for the Combat Jiu Jitsu Middleweight World Championships but just like always, the event delivered more than a dozen exciting, high-level matchups. There were two TKO finishes in the opening round courtesy of Mikey Gonzalez and Matt Secor, something that’s still pretty rare to see under Combat Jiu Jitsu rules despite the fact that open-handed strikes are legal on the ground. The majority of those first-round matches ended in a finish in the regulation time-period too, with Calon Sabino and Victor Rodriguez being the only pair to need EBI overtime.
Gonzalez unfortunately had to withdraw from the event after suffering an eye poke during his win, and was replaced by Derek Rayfield in the quarter-finals. Rayfield took hold of this opportunity with both hands and managed to defeat both Secor and Ben Dyson in EBI overtime to book his place in the final. On the other side of the bracket, Ryan Aitken defeated some of the favorites of the tournament in Hunter Colvin and Kyle Chambers after his slick finish of Nick Greene in the opening round. The final was an incredibly close affair but in the end, Aitken managed to come out on top and earn the Combat Jiu Jitsu Middleweight world championship with a choke in EBI overtime.
