It looks like Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway might be heading for their long-awaited rematch after all, as their second fight has just been announced for UFC 324 on January 24th, 2025. It looks as though it might not have been done on purpose though, as the initial social media announcement was very quickly pulled down. This is far from the first time that the UFC have made an error like this, as many fights have been leaked one way or another. It’s not a complete surprise either, as both Holloway and Oliveira have publicly been open to fighting each other for a while now.
It’s also reportedly going to be the second time that Holloway will defend his BMF title, after he won it by knocking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 a little over a year ago. Although the title is a purely symbolic one that doesn’t stick to a single weight class, Holloway chose to become the first person to defend it. He won a five-round decision over Dustin Poirier at UFC 314 to bring the belt back to Hawaii again and although Holloway has historically been a featherweight fighter, both his BMF title-fights have taken place at lightweight instead.
This next fight against Oliveira would likely take place at lightweight too, as Oliveira hasn’t fought at featherweight since 2016 and missed weight several times when he was fighting there. It would also help bring some closure to the friendly rivalry that the two fighters have. There’s no bad blood between them at all, but their last meeting didn’t really end in a satisfactory way. Holloway got the win on paper but it was down to the fact that Oliveira suffered a freak esophagus injury in the first round and was unable to continue. Now that they’ve both built reputations as exciting fighters and have had their own separate title-reigns, it’s the ideal time to find out how that fight goes.
