BJJ Stars 5 delivered some incredible action thanks to their Heavyweight Grand Prix and a number of high-profile superfights during the build-up, the results of which speak for themselves. The superfights featured a number of big names, including our pick for Breakthrough Grappler of the Year 2020, Roberto Jimenez. He came up short against Isaque Bahiense in the end but the match was entertaining throughout, as was Gabriel Rollo’s match against the legendary Milton Vieira, the grappler widely credited with the invention of the Anaconda Choke. Leandro Lo was the only other grappler to manage to get the finish in the superfights as he submitted Alex Munis shortly before his older brother Erich attempted to win the Heavyweight Grand Prix.

The Heavyweight Grand Prix gave us a fantastic underdog story throughout the night, starting when Gutemberg Pereira defeated Nicholas Meregali by racking up several advantages in a match with no points on the board. Shortly after this, Pereira managed to avenge his loss against Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa in another incredibly close match that went to the judge’s decision. Although he came up short in the final against the vastly more experienced Felipe Pena, Pereira really put his name on the map by taking victories over two of the men who were favorites to take home the crown.

Pena put on a dominating display in his opening round match against Luiz Panza where he registered the only submission win of the entire Grand Prix, coming by way of Guillotine. Erich Munis then put up a very tough fight against the veteran grappler, finding himself equal on points but losing 3-1 on advantages in the end. He held on to a two-point lead that he managed to earn against Pereira in the final and went on to be declared the winner, taking home the prize of 100,000 Brazilian Real and the title of BJJ Stars Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion.
