BJJ Stars 4 was yet another fantastic event put on by the Brazilian promotion as they set out to crown their first Middleweight grand prix champion. The tournament was contested under traditional IBJJF rules and somewhat predictably, the most successful IBJJF athlete in the field was the one who emerged victorious. Leandro Lo managed to edge out a close victory by a single advantage against Jaime Canuto in the opening round before putting on a clinical display to win 7-0 on points against Claudio Calasans. In the final he came up against Isaque Bahiense and had another close-fought match, although he emerged victorious by a single advantage once again.
His fellow finalist, Isaque Bahiense, managed to get the only finish of the Middleweight tournament against Otavio De Sousa in the semi-finals after an impressive victory over one of the favorites, Gustavo Batista, in the opening round. One of Bahiense’s students back at Dream Art in Manaus, Erich Munis, also came away with an impressive showing as he defeated Victor Hugo on points in one of his first fights as a black belt after a recent promotion. Dimitrius Souza was another underdog that exceeded expectations as he managed to submit ex-Bellator Middleweight World Champion Rafael Lovato Jr with a Crucifix choke in their superfight.
