ONE Fight Night 7 took place on February 24th, 2023 and the results of the ONE Championship event really do speak for themselves. There were two different grappling matches scheduled for the event, one on the preliminary card and one on the main card. First up was a bout between top BJJ competitor Tommy Langaker and Sambo world champion Uali Kurzhev, with the two men competing in a battle between two different disciplines. Langaker was coming into the match on a high after he defeated Renato Canuto in his debut for the promotion, while Kurzhev experienced different results in his debut as he was submitted by Kade Ruotolo with a heelhook.
Tommy Langaker put in a pretty much flawless performance when he stepped into the ring, and it took him less than three minutes to repeat the same feat as Ruotolo. Langaker also submitted Uali Kurzhev and he also did it with leg attacks, demonstrating that this is likely a clear weakness in Kurzhev’s grappling game. The submission win earned Langaker a hefty $50,000 performance bonus, with the other one going to Tawanchai P.K.Saenchai for successfully defending the featherweight Muay Thai title. Then after a few other fights in the various different disciplines that ONE Championship specialises in, Danielle Kelly was facing off against MMA veteran and black belt Judoka Ayaka Miura.
This match was significantly less one-sided and Ayaka Miura actually had a deep submission attempt of her own very early into the match. She was already attacking the straight armbar at around the minute-mark of their match but Danielle Kelly survived and countered by taking Miura’s back. That’s pretty much where Kelly stayed from then on and she kept trying to finish the rear-naked choke, but unfortunately the time ran out. This marked the third consecutive time that Kelly fought to the end of a ONE Championship grappling match, with her debut being a draw against Mei Yamaguchi and her last fight being another decision win against Mariia Molchanova.
