Jiu-Jitsu often runs in the family and it seems like AJ Agazarm is no exception, as he has just been able to promote his younger brother Anthony to purple belt in BJJ. Agazarm is a veteran of both Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, having competed on the biggest stages of both sports over the past decade. He started out his combat sports career as a successful wrestler in his youth and only transitioned to the sports he has become more well-known for almost by chance. Agazarm took an MMA fight on short notice and although he won, he was encouraged to take up Jiu-Jitsu to help him succeed in the sport going forward.
He started winning almost immediately after making the transition to Jiu-Jitsu, taking home his first IBJJF Pan Championship and World Championship at the coloured belt levels in 2007. That success continued over the next few years until Agazarm was promoted to black belt in 2013, and he carried it on through to the highest level of the sport. Agazarm won several IBJJF no gi majors that same year, culminating in an IBJJF no gi World Championship at black belt in 2014. In the years since, Agazarm has reached the podium of these same events multiple times and even came away with a silver medal at ADCC 2017.
Agazarm then returned to MMA in 2019 and put together a 3-2 professional record entirely in the Bellator cage, although a knee injury in his fifth fight took him out of action for quite some time. He got back into the competitive Jiu-Jitsu upon his recovery though and ended up becoming one of the select few invited to compete at ADCC 2022. Now it seems as though his younger brother, Anthony Agazarm, is following the same path that AJ has walked over the last few years in the BJJ world. Not only does Anthony also have a ton of experience in wrestling but he’s also been competing at IBJJF events at the blue belt level already. It’ll be interesting to see if he chooses to compete at IBJJF majors and ADCC trials events in the coming years, and if he can replicate AJ’s success.
