The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour – Abu Dhabi 2024 took place on May 12th, 2024 and the final champions of the 2023/2024 season were crowned in the results. It was a fantastic event as always, with dozens of elite grapplers making the journey to compete against one another and plenty of surprises as the brackets unfolded. There were some predictable winners in a few divisions as well of course, particularly at lightweight and middleweight where Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira and Uanderson Ferreira won respectively. In other more predictable results, Lucas Protasio won gold at welterweight and the super-heavyweight champion was Felipe Bezerra.
Theyab Alnuaimi was a surprising winner at light-featherweight and not many people would have predicted that Khaled Alshehhi would win at featherweight, but the biggest shock came in the light-heavyweight division. Frequent masters competitor Jackson Sousa challenged himself against elite adult competitor and came out on top, leaving with a gold medal. There was even more underdog victories in the women’s divisions though, with veteran competitor Ariadne Oliveira winning at light-featherweight and Rafaela Bertolot winning at middleweight.
The biggest shock of the entire tournament came in the women’s heavyweight division though, as 20 year-old brown belt Isabely Lemos emerged victorious in one of the toughest brackets of the tournament. She beat 3 top black belt competitors in a row in order to take home the gold medal, including both of the division’s favorites. The final women’s weight classes were won by their top contenders though, as Diana Teixeira emerged victorious at roosterweight and Julia Alves submitted all three of her opponents to win the middleweight division.
