Wiz Khalifa is one of the most famous rappers on the planet, and now he’s apparently set to have his first BJJ match. While there’s no news yet on who his opponent will be, his debut match will apparently be contested at a future High Rollerz event under their ruleset and will be over 6 minutes and in the gi. This would make some sense, not only because of the fact that he has a fair amount in common with the promotion but also because he’s actually been involved with them in the past. All the way back at High Rollerz 15, he was one of several famous faces like Mike Tyson and B-Real to sponsor grapplers to compete.
Wiz Khalifa has achieved some incredible things over his career as a rapper, bursting onto the scene with successful mixtapes all the way back in 2005. Since then, he’s gone from strength to strength and has managed to release multiple Platinum-selling albums. He’s been an almost-permanent feature at the top of the charts for well over a decade and his hit song ‘See You Again’ peaked at number 1 for 12 non-continuous weeks.
Wiz Khalifa has actually been involved in combat sports for quite some time and started training BJJ under the legendary Rigan Machado in 2017, along with taking up Muay Thai as well. Despite having several years of training under his belt, this will be the first BJJ match that Wiz Khalifa has ever taken and it’ll be interesting to see how he fares in a live situation. He’s far from the first celebrity to get involved in BJJ, but so very few of them have ever decided to test themselves in competition. Hollywood star Tom Hardy is among the few to step on the competition mats and he’s ended up putting in several great performances over the last few years, so this could mark a change in the way that celebrities actually engage in the sport.
The news that Wiz Khalifa was set to have his first BJJ match under the ruleset of High Rollerz events was announced in a post to the promotion’s official Instagram account:
