It was clear from the very moment that the Who’s Number One (WNO) Championships were first announced that the results were going to be an incredible weekend of high-level grappling action. There was a huge number of surprises and plenty of upsets as many less experienced or disadvantaged competitors managed to pull out the win. Perhaps the most surprising of all came in the opening round of the women’s Heavyweight division when Amanda Leve dominated Gabi Garcia despite a phenomenal weight disadvantage and took the unanimous decision win. Despite this impressive performance, Leve lost in the next round to the eventual winner Rafaela Guedes
That wasn’t the only overachieving performance in the women’s brackets though as Grace Gundrum managed to outclass two elite opponents in Danielle Kelly and Jessa Khan in the Strawweight division, before falling in the final to Mayssa Bastos. In the men’s Lightweight division there was another pair of shock upsets in the first round when Gabriel Sousa submitted Mikey Musumeci with a north south choke and the young teenager Cole Abate outworked Geo Martinez to a decision victory. Sousa emerged victorious when the pair met in the next round but couldn’t make a dent in the unstoppable run of Kade Ruotolo.
His brother Tye Ruotolo performed just as well in the men’s Middleweight division by submitting Dante Leon and Johnny Tama before winning a decision in his toughest match of the night against Mica Galvao. Pedigo Submission Fighting’s Jacob Couch had a great night in the same division by going 2-2 and ending up with third-place, owing in part to Jon ‘Thor’ Blank being injured in their match. The men’s Heavyweight division of the WNO championships delivered equally surprising results as the eventual champion turned out to be ADCC veteran Tim Spriggs, who defeated divisional favorite Kaynan Duarte in the final.
