Roger Gracie and Ffion Davies are among the most successful BJJ competitors in the history of the sport and the two legends have recently been getting some time in rolling together. They have competed in drastically different weight classes and are from two different generations, so an opportunity to watch a meeting between two competitors like this is incredibly rare. It can often be difficult for newer grapplers to learn to train with someone lighter in a productive fashion too, so watching footage of the best in the world doing it can be a huge learning tool for anyone struggling with that.
Roger is one of the greatest competitors to ever set foot on the mats, with an incredible ten IBJJF World Championship gold medals to his name and the perfect ADCC run of eight wins and eight submissions. From his ADCC debut as a brown belt in 2003 to the first time he stepped away from competition in 2010, Roger racked up an incredible 73 wins with 62 submissions and only lost 6 matches. He returned in 2012 for a comeback match against Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida that ended in a draw and after a win over Rodrigo ‘Comprido’ Medeiros a few years later, he settled the score with Buchecha by submitting him in the final match of his career in 2017.
Davies on the other hand is still actively competing, but she’s already established a legacy as the most successful European grappler to date and one of the top women in her generation. ADCC 2022 saw her become the first European to win the prestigious event, and the following year she became the first European to win double gold at the IBJJF No Gi World Championship. She’s faced almost every single top female competitor in the world over the last six years and beaten the majority of them. Just like Roger Gracie before her, Ffion Davies is known for having equal success in both gi and no gi events.
