MMA is undoubtedly an incredibly dangerous sport and injuries happen all the time, but not many people would have imagined that someone might actually manage to break their own arm while attempting to finish a buggy choke. That’s exactly what happened at a local Russian promotion however, when Igor Konstantinov took on Vasily Rudenko at MMA Series 54. MMA is a very unpredictable sport and we’ve seen fighters manage to cause catastrophic injury to themselves before, but never quite like this.
The fight was contested in the welterweight division, where 27 year-old Konstantinov held a professional record of 2-4 prior to stepping into the cage. His opponent Rudenko was the clear favorite leading up to the fight, as he held a perfect 4-0 professional record at the age of just 23, with all of his wins coming by way of stoppage. Konstantinov managed to gain the upper hand early in the first round of the fight when he locked up a buggy choke that looked pretty tight, although Rudenko stayed calm and collected while he tried to work his way free.
Rudenko tried a number of different tactics to free himself from the choke but in the end, he didn’t need to escape at all. While Konstantinov was squeezing and attempting to finish the buggy choke, the arm he was using broke under the pressure of his own leg and the MMA fight was quickly ended as a result. Officially, Rudenko climbed to 5-0 with a win by doctor stoppage and he will no doubt move on to bigger things in the Russian regional circuit while Konstantinov will now be looking at some significant time away from the sport rehabilitating a particularly gruesome injury.
The footage of the Igor Konstantinov breaking his own arm with the buggy choke he was attempting to finish Vasily Rudenko with at MMA series 54 has since been uploaded to Twitter:
