Footage of a male Marine taking a match with a female grappler went viral recently, largely because of a huge slam and the fact that he ended up being submitted. Not only did the Marine have the obvious advantage but it appears as though he also had a size advantage over the female grappler as well. In true testament to the phrase ‘technique beats strength’, the woman is able to overcome those disadvantages with the use of her skills. It’s something that has been seen time and time again, but it’s still valuable to see just how much of a difference a solid understanding of BJJ can be.
They start out pretty cagey at first and although the female grappler might have a greater understanding of grappling, it’s clear that the Marine does have a little bit of knowledge at least. They both go straight at one another and start fighting in the clinch, with the Marine grabbing a hold of the woman’s legs and trying to land a big takedown. The female grappler recovers in mid-air very well and lands on her knees, immediately looking to wrestle up on her opponent. She manages to do so, and she wins the scramble to grab the front-headlock on him as well.
The female grappler pulls guard and attempts an arm-in guillotine but the Marine lifts her up in the air and she has to recover to her feet instead, before snapping him down to the ground. She uses that moment to get around to his back, immediately snaking her arm around his neck for the rear-naked choke and putting her hooks in. That’s the moment that Marine stands up and surprises the female grappler by diving backwards to slam her to the mat, but it isn’t enough to save him from being submitted. She accepts the slam and keeps the choke in, squeezing to force him to tap just a few seconds later.
