Gillian Robertson and Rose Namajunas were set to clash in the main event of Fury Pro Grappling 6, but the match didn’t last long at all. Both women are MMA veterans and UFC fighters, but Robertson is much more well known for her BJJ skills than the former world champion Namajunas. Robertson holds the record for most submission finishes of any female fighter and most finishes in the flyweight division, having submitted six opponents since her UFC debut in 2017. Although her MMA career is undoubtedly her main focus, she has also found the time to compete in several professional grappling events as well.
Robertson has defeated Katlyn Chookagian at Submission Underground 26 and was one of a handful of women selected to compete in the inaugural Medusa event, in the bantamweight Combat Jiu Jitsu tournament. Robertson also has experience competing on the same stage she met Namajunas on, as she was matched up on the preliminary card of Fury Pro Grappling 3. There she defeated Chrissy Briggs by unanimous decision, an impressive performance that helped make her case for main event status at this event.
Namajunas meanwhile is significantly less active on the professional grappling scene. She was also scheduled to compete at Fury Pro Grappling 3 in the main event against Danielle Kelly, but withdrew at the last minute and was replaced by Carla Esparza. She hasn’t made it to the mats for any matches in recent years but she has claimed and defended the UFC strawweight title on two separate occasions, so it’s not as if she’s been inactive at all. Nonetheless, when Rose Namajunas met Gillian Robertson at Fury Pro Grappling 6 the difference between the two was immediately clear. It only took Robertson a total of 65 seconds to take her back and lock up a rear-naked choke, forcing Namajunas to tap almost immediately.
