Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson recently decided to stop by New Wave Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas for a rolling session with Garry Tonon. Both men are currently signed to ONE Championship and are at very different points in their MMA careers, but they’re both known as fantastic high-level grapplers. The training session with Tonon forms part of the preparation that Johnson is doing for his next fight against Adriano Moraes, the conclusion of a trilogy that the two men have staged in recent times.
Johnson currently holds an amazing 31-4-1 professional MMA record and holds an incredible promotional record of eleven title defences from when he was the UFC Flyweight world champion. He was eventually dethrone by Henry Cejudo in 2018 before moving over to ONE Championship to enter their Flyweight grand prix. Johnson went on to win the tournament by defeating three tough opponents, earning the right to challenge Adriano Moraes for the title. He lost the pair’s first fight in April 2021 by knockout but got his revenge in August 2022, returning the favour and knocking out Moraes to get the win.
Tonon meanwhile only began his professional MMA career in 2018, immediately signing to ONE Championship for his debut. Tonon rattled off five quick finishes in his first five fights, before having a tough fight against Koyomi Matsushima in which he persevered and won a decision. These performances led to Tonon getting his very first title shot, challenging Ryan Hall’s teammate Thanh Le for the ONE Championship Featherweight title. Tonon was viciously knocked out in that fight and will be looking to rebound from his first professional loss in the near-future. While Garry Tonon and Demetrious Johnson are at very different points in their respective MMA careers, a tough rolling session between them can only be beneficial for both fighters.
