MMA legend Demetrious Johnson recently took a trip to Austin, Texas and decided to stop for a training session with the elite grapplers at B-Team Jiu-Jitsu. Although Johnson is known far more for his work in MMA, a big part of that success was down to his ability on the ground. Johnson combined incredible wrestling and slick submission skills to become a fearsome grappler during his time as the best flyweight MMA fighter in the world. Of course, his striking was at the very top level as well and he has always been regarded as one of the most well-rounded fighters in the history of the sport.
Johnson has actually drifted a little further into the grappling world towards the end of his career and even won a gold medal at the IBJJF Master World Championship at brown belt. He was still competing as an MMA fighter at the time so naturally he could only dedicate so much time to Jiu-Jitsu. He was awarded his black belt not long after and he publicly announced his decision to retire from MMA shortly afterward. He has been enjoying his retirement though and has only made one competition appearance since then, going 2-1 and dropping out in the quarter-finals of a pretty big division.
He has said that he will continue competing in Jiu-Jitsu after retiring from MMA so it’s likely that fans get to see him in the masters divisions of major tournaments again soon. He’s been getting some high-level training in to prepare for it too, as he was recently sparring with the Ruotolo brothers too. Now that Demetrious Johnson is down at B-Team Jiu-Jitsu, he has even bigger number of training partners to learn from. Just in the footage that was released alone, Johnson can be seen getting a few sparring rounds in with ADCC silver medalists Nicky Rodriguez and Jacob Rodriguez.
