Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu recently had a friendly round of BJJ sparring with professional boxer Tony Jeffries and submitted him an incredible 33 times within just 6 minutes. Jeffries was a fantastic boxer throughout his amateur career and actually represented his home country of England at both the European Championships and at the Olympics. He reached the podium of the European Championships in boxing three times throughout his time as an amateur, winning a pair of bronze medals and a silver medal between 2004 and 2008. Undoubtedly his crowning achievement came in 2008 though, when he won a bronze medal for boxing in the Olympic games in Beijing, China.
Jeffries turned professional the following year and quickly amassed a 9-0-1 record in the sport, before retiring due to numerous issues with his hands that required surgery. After that surgery and the following treatment was unsuccessful, he was forced to retire from the sport. Since then, he’s opened his own gym and become even more well-known for his influence in the online boxing community. Although Jeffries retired from his first combat sports career, he’s since taken an interest in BJJ and has actually become a two stripe white belt in the sport after training for a year.
After a little conversation with Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu when the pair met recently, Tony Jeffries was fortunate enough to get a quick round of sparring in with him. Cyborg didn’t take it easy on him though, and he actually submitted Jeffries an incredible 33 times in just 6 minutes. Getting a submission every 5 seconds or so is genuinely crazy, even if the person you’re rolling with is pretty much brand new to the sport. For a multiple-time IBJJF no gi world champion like Cyborg though, this is really just another day in the office.
