A brawl broke out at Subversiv 11 on September 8th, 2024 and it all started with a crowd member booing a grappler who was competing at the event. It was a Combat Jiu-Jitsu event and tensions can often run high under that ruleset, as strikes can add a bit of animosity to the matches. Regardless, that doesn’t excuse anyone either in the crowd or on the mats themselves for getting involved in a physical altercation. The event started off brilliantly as well, with a ton of high-level matches and some exciting highlight-reel moments. Things were going well all the way up until the final match of the night in fact, and that’s when things started to tip over the edge.
The main event was a team grappling match for the promotion’s title and the format meant that there would be three matches between different grapplers to determine the overall winner. The first two matches were split, so Team Phaze and Team Level were tied going into the final match of the night between Alex Grandy and Markus Perez. The match started out just like any other but before long, Grandy was using hard collar-ties and Perez started to complain to the referee about the impact of them. Tensions were starting to flare and Perez was visibly frustrated by Grandy’s approach throughout the match.
Neither man could get the finish in regulation time and it went to EBI overtime, where Grandy was able to get the win. That should have been the end of it and all that was left of the event was to crown Team Phaze as the winners, but everything got out of hand. A member of the crowd was audibly booing Perez and at one point was doing so directly in front of him, so he turned to the man and kicked him. That moment sparked a huge brawl at Subversiv 11, as Grandy grabbed Perez from behind and slammed him to the mat while other members of the audience quickly got involved. Security and other members of the audience were able to calm things down and eventually the champions were crowned without any further altercations.
