The IBJJF Dallas Summer Open 2024 took place on August 3rd and 4th, 2024 and there was quite a few entertaining matches as the black belt divisions unfolded. There weren’t many female grapplers competing at the event unfortunately and in an unusual twist, there were actually more doing no gi than gi this time around. Mayara Moreira was the only black belt who entered both, so she left with four gold medals across both of the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions even though she only had to win matches in the no gi absolute. That wasn’t exactly easy though, as she beat medium-heavyweight winner Gabi Schuck in the final there.
The men’s no gi absolute winner was Joao Assonitis, and he that was a particularly impressive feat for such a light competitor. Assonitis actually won the lightweight division earlier in the day and every other man on the podium was much heavier than him. The silver medalist was the next lightest, and that was the default middleweight winner Matheus Galvao. The gi absolute was won by top competitor Yan Paiva, which is a much more predictable outcome. That’s because Paiva was among the heaviest in the bracket, having won the ultra-heavyweight division just prior to that.
Paiva shared the final of the gi absolute division with his teammate at Six Blade Jiu-Jitsu, Gabriel Cardoso; who had also already won his own weight class at lightweight. There was plenty of action in every division at the IBJJF Dallas Summer Open 2024 but one of the other more notable names was actually competing at light-featherweight in the gi. He only had to win one match to take home the gold medal, but Welison Fernandes also added to the points total for Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu by doing just that. The whole team did very well in the black belt gi divisions but that wasn’t quite enough for them to walk away with the team trophy, as they finished in second behind LEAD BJJ.
