The IBJJF Sacramento Open 2024 took place across February 24th and 25th, 2024 and there were quite a few big matches taking place at the event. Mateus Rodrigues took home two gold medals on the first day in the gi and he beat the same person in the final of both the heavyweight and absolute divisions, Paulo Merlin. The third spot on the absolute podium featured Caio Vinicius, shortly after he stood in the same place for the medium-heavyweight. Matheus Luna took home the gold medal in that weight class and these weren’t the only weight classes where more than one top competitor entered.
One of the main storylines emerging at the IBJJF Sacramento Open 2024 was the battle between Art of Jiu-Jitsu and Ares BJJ. The teams shared the final in both the light-featherweight and lightweight divisions, although they each left with one win each. Keven Carrasco represented Ares BJJ very well in the light-featherweight division where he beat Jordan Vaisman to take gold, while his teammate Danilo Moreira lost the lightweight final against Pablo Lavaselli. There was plenty of entertainment elsewhere as well, as several elite female BJJ competitors also turned out for some tough matches at the event.
Mayara Custodio won the gi absolute division after getting a default gold at super-heavyweight, while the woman she beat in the final was the medium-heavyweight champion Elizabeth Mitrovic. She only had one match in her weight class where she beat Leticia Cardozo, who also had to settle for a bronze medal in the absolute division. The featherweight division had a good turnout too, with Karen Terra winning gold and Andreza Morais earning a silver medal from there. There weren’t many no gi matches for either men or women at the event and there were quite a few default gold medals given out at black belt. Morais did win her match at featherweight to take home gold though and Mitrovic won the absolute division to add another medal to her tally.
