The ADCC Toronto Open 2024 took place on February 3rd, 2024 and there were several top competitors who made the journey to Canada in order to compete at the event. It was a good event for the Standard BJJ team, as both Deandre Corbe and Gavin Corbe left with gold medals from the under 70kg and under 76kg divisions respectively. There were some impressive performances in the heavier divisions too, particularly at under 91kg where David Garmo submitted two out of three opponents in order to emerge victorious. Laysla Barbosa stood out as well, as the teenage prospect training under Melqui Galvao beat some tough opponents in order to win the under 60kg division.
Along with all the top talent traveling from far away to take to the mats, there was also a ton of local talent competing and it really demonstrated the high level of Jiu-Jitsu emerging from Canada. There was plenty of Canadian medalists and several Canadian champions, including one of the country’s top competitors. Maxim Cote entered the under 83kg division and although all three places on the podium were occupied by Canadian grapplers, he was the one who stood in the top position.
