Tainan Dalpra has just announced that he managed to raise $4,000 US Dollars (almost $20,000 Brazilian Real) for charity by selling the gi he wore during his fantastic performance at the 2023 edition of Brasileiro. The money raised will be donated to social projects in Brazil, with Dalpra yet to confirm exactly which ones he has chosen to support. Dalpra showed some fantastic foresight by revealing that the gi would go on auction long before he even stepped on to the mats at the prestigious tournament, demonstrating just how confident he was that he would emerge victorious.
That confidence proved to be well-founded of course, as Dalpra did win the middleweight division at the IBJJF Brazilian National Championship 2023 (Brasileiro). This meant that he was now three-quarters of the way through achieving an IBJJF grand slam for 2023, and had just one more tournament to win in order to secure one of the rarest achievements in the sport. This is part of what made the gi so valuable at present, and it will likely only increase in value if Dalpra does manage to win the IBJJF World Championship later this year.
Tainan Dalpra announced the news that he had managed to raise $4,000 for charity with the sale of the gi wore at Brasileiro 2023 in a post to his official Instagram account. The original announcement was made in Portuguese, but the English translation can be found below:
“My Brasileiro kimono was sold for $4000 dollars (almost 20,000 reais) in the online auction and as promised I will be choosing three projects to distribute this money and somehow help impact the lives of kids with jiu jitsu. Thank you all for the love, I’m so happy to be able to use my work to help others. This is just the beginning – if you can mark and comment on the work of a social project in the comments below, this week I will be publishing the 3 chosen social projects.”
