Submission Underground 29 saw Chael Sonnen’s grappling promotion continue it’s great work by delivering another action-packed event that included the continuation of the tag-team grappling championship. That was actually the only title on the line at the event as both of the promotion’s absolute champions, Mason Fowler and Amanda Loewen, were not in attendance. As a result, the main event saw Andy Varela take on UFC veteran Sean Strickland and the ending was probably the most unusual point of the entire event.
With around forty five seconds left of the match, Strickland turned away from Varela and lifted his arms in the air to celebrate and Varela immediately attempted to footsweep him from behind. When that didn’t work, it only took a second for Varela to change his mind and leap on to Strickland’s back to sink in a rear-naked choke. Strickland attempted to dive forward on to the mat and land on Varela but by that point it was far too late and he was forced to tap to the choke.
